The age of new styles of learning have arrived, and it has come by the way of the internet. I feel that there is endless possibilities in conducting research and finding new and exciting concepts of teaching online. For example in the You Tube video titled “The Networked Student” by Wendy Drexler, she demonstrated that teaching goes beyond reading a text book and taking tests. Her video shows a student doing research beyond the library and going online to the internet finding pod casts lectures from professors all over. By conducting research online students have the ability to be a part of a much larger community of learners thus expanding their education beyond the classroom.
Not only is this kind of research beneficial to the student but if gives the online community of networked learners the opportunity to share their findings and thoughts on what others have found. Pod casts, you tube videos, and access to college libraries world wide gives the student/researcher a better understanding of what they are studying.
I feel that in this day and age technology has pushed us into a whole new world of teaching that does go beyond the text book. Although I like it when teachers provide text books and reading materials for the classroom, I understand that these new ways of learning are becoming just as important. I think its wonderful to have blogs like these to be able to express how you feel about the assignments and readings done for the week. Its great to see how others interpreted the readings as well.

I agree with you that all this new technology has allowed teachers to now teach past the textbook. It almost seems silly to continue to lecture and teach in traditional methods with all this great technology at our fingertips. I also enjoyed hearing about all the different forms of technology that the student accessed, many of which you mentioned in your blog.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post this week, because it puts Drexler's video into a completely different perspective than what I expressed in my blog. The way you describe connectivism promotes all the wonderful things about it, whereas my post highlighted all the problems surrounding it. You made me realize that I love the idea of using all of these resources in the classroom, but I still don't like the way it is presented in the video. I think these resources should be used in conjuncture with a textbook and lectures. After all, every student is different and learns best differently as well.
ReplyDeleteLearning has definitely taken a turn. Is it really better, who knows... I still think we should use all forms of learning, traditional and new age. The technology is great and can be a fundamental source for learning. As educators we need to embrace the technology, but not all students have access to it after hours-therefore traditional needs to remain.
