Researching Past and Present: Activity Reflection

I remember back in high school doing research the “old fashion way” that is physically going into the library and looking at books, new papers, and magazine articles. This manual labor has been replaced with the world wide web, information is now ready in seconds at your finger tips. Doing this search activity for class had made me see just how many methods there are for finding research on the internet.

I found it fascinating just how many search engines there are, if you stop and think about it the most popular ones come to mind like Yahoo and Google for example. To be a great researcher though you must check several sites to get the most information you can. In doing the search activity for my class I learned how to find and navigate many sites to find information easier. Digital libraries now exist where you can look at an article in a college library three states away. With these new types of resources available it makes doing research faster and easier.

In looking at the text book, Integrating Technology and Digital Media in the Classroom,(131) I found a whole list of search web sites I didn’t know existed. The one I found the most interesting was Google Scholar. Its basically a search engine that allows researchers to look up and scholarly works, for example theses and books. This search engine would have come in handy when I was working on my BA in history.

As a soon to be educator I found that Diigo was a great search engine. Not only can you find articles and images, but you can bookmark, highlight, and annotate them as well. I believe site will help keep me organized when I do teach. I found all the websites listed in the book geared to educators to be highly informative. For example
www.siteforteachers.com was a great site as well as http://www.eduref.org./.

These sites link educators around the globe with new ways to teach enhancing their curriculum and keeping the children interested in the topic. Since I want to teach history and history can be boring to some, I feel these sites can help decrease the boredom in the classroom and instead engage the students.

  1. I too came from old school. The school or local library is where we went and looked up our subject in the card catalog. Then proceeded to the location where the material was. Most of the research material you could not take out of the library. It is great that students today have so much at their finger tips. Technology in the classroom enhances their learning.

The future of Technology is moving rapidly.
I feel so behind times. Diigo is a great place, it is an effective tool for teaching as well. Diigo's features allow teachers to highlight critical features within text and images and write comments directly on the web pages, to collect and organize series of web pages and web sites into coherent and thematic sets, and to facilitate online conversations within the context of the materials themselves. Diigo also allows teachers to collaborate and share resources among themselves.
